Mystai

MIS-ty (Greek μύσται, singular μύστης)

The initiates of a Greek mystery cult — especially the Eleusinian Mysteries — who underwent secret rites (telete) and thereby gained knowledge and protection unavailable to the uninitiated, especially in the afterlife.

Mystai (Greek μύσται, singular μύστης, from myein, “to close” — the eyes, or the mouth; hence “the closed-eyes ones” or “the sealed ones”) are those who have been formally initiated into a mystery cult. In Greek religion, mysteries (mystêria) were cult practices open only to initiates — rites, revelations, and experiences that conferred spiritual transformation and, most importantly, a better fate in the afterlife.

The Eleusinian Mysteries

The most famous mysteries were those of Demeter and Kore (Persephone) at Eleusis, conducted annually for nearly two thousand years. The Homeric Hymn to Demeter (lines 473–482) states the promise: “Blessed is the earth-born mortal who has seen these things. But the uninitiate, the one who has had no share in the holy rites, never has the same lot when dead beneath the shadowy darkness.” The mystai received something — exactly what was kept secret — that changed their afterlife.

The testimonies

Multiple ancient authors testify to the effect of initiation without revealing the content. Pindar, Fragment 137: “Blessed is he who has seen these things before going below the earth; he knows the end of life; he knows its Zeus-given beginning.” Sophocles, Fragment 837: “Thrice-blessed those mortals who go to Hades having seen these rites — for them alone there is life there; for others all is misery.”

Plato, Phaedrus 249c makes the Eleusinian vocabulary his own: the philosopher who has been well-initiated in past lives recognizes the beautiful and the true in this life, his memory stirring from the initiations he underwent before birth.

The telete

Initiation was called telete — the rite of completion. The mystai underwent a progression: preliminary purification (katharmos), a period as a mystes, then (optionally) a deeper initiation as an epoptes (“one who has seen”). The experience included things seen, things heard, and things done — the three modes of the mysteries. What was seen was the most closely guarded secret of ancient religion.
