Rune Rede — Daily Rune Drawing
Level: beginner
The runes are not mere letters — they are forces of the cosmos that Odin won through nine nights of suffering on Yggdrasil. Drawing a daily rune opens a line of communication with these forces and trains the mind to see the world through their lens.
The rite, step by step
- 1
Center Yourself
Sit quietly. Take three slow breaths. With each breath, let your awareness settle from the noise of the day into the stillness beneath. You are at the roots of Yggdrasil. The Well of Urðr is before you.
- 2
Ask Your Question
Hold your rune bag or place runes face-down. Form a silent question: it can be as simple as 'What should I be aware of today?' or as specific as a challenge you face. Do not grasp for answers yet.
- 3
Draw the Rune
Without looking, reach into your bag and draw a single rune. Place it face-down before you. Before turning it over, take one breath. Then reveal it.
- 4
Contemplate
Study the rune. Say its name aloud. Let its shape speak to you — what does it look like? What does it feel like to hold? Sit with it for at least two minutes before consulting any written meaning.
- 5
Apply the Rede
Connect the rune's energy to your day. Ask: where does this rune's quality appear in my life right now? If it is Fehu (wealth/flow), where is energy moving or stuck? If Isa (ice/stillness), where must you pause? Write one sentence in your journal.
- 6
Close
Return the rune to its place. Say: 'I receive this rede with open eyes. May the wisdom of the runes guide my steps today.' Carry the rune's image in your mind as you go about your day.
