Norse Tradition
Fólkvangr
FOLK-vang-r (Old Norse Fólkvangr)
Freyja's realm of the dead in Norse cosmology — she chooses half of all warriors slain in battle and receives them in her hall Sessrúmnir, while Odin takes the other half for Valhöll.
Fólkvangr (Old Norse, “field of the people” or “field of warriors”) is the realm of the goddess Freyja in Ásgarðr, and the afterlife destination of half of all warriors slain in battle. This fact — stated plainly in Grímnismál and confirmed by Snorri — is often overlooked in popular accounts that treat Valhöll as the sole warrior’s afterlife.
The primary source
Grímnismál stanza 14 is the essential text, delivered in Odin’s voice:
Fólkvangr it is called, and there Freyja decides seats in the hall. Half the slain she chooses each day, and Odin owns the other half.
The division is equal and deliberate. Freyja is not a lesser recipient; she takes the same share as the Allfather. Her hall in Fólkvangr is called Sessrúmnir (“rich in seats”) — Gylfaginning ch. 24 calls it large and beautiful.
What Fólkvangr means theologically
The existence of Fólkvangr corrects two common misreadings. First, the Norse warrior afterlife was not exclusively Odin’s domain. Second, Freyja’s role in death is not secondary to her role in love and fertility: she is the Valfreyja, “Lady of the Slain,” and she exercises her judgment over the battlefield dead independently of Odin’s valkyrjur. The sources do not describe her method of selection, but the authority is unambiguous.
Fólkvangr in modern practice
Modern Ásatrú practitioners honoring Freyja may acknowledge Fólkvangr when working with the dead — particularly those who did not see themselves as Odin-oriented in life. The field offers a counterbalance to the single-hall model and expands the theological picture of what a Norse “good death” might mean.
