On Maat

Battiscombe Gunn, 1906

Follow thy heart all the days of thy life; do not commit excess beyond what is ordained. Do not diminish the time of following the heart, for it is abhorrent to the spirit to waste the appointed hours. Spend each day in delight, but let it not be for thyself alone. Maat is the companion of true joy.

Maat is great and its virtue is enduring. It has not been disturbed since the time of its Creator. Punishment is meted out to him who transgresses its ordinances. It lies as a path for him who knows nothing. Wrongdoing has never yet succeeded in bringing its affairs to a safe conclusion. Men say: Maat is indeed the strength of God.
