What Dagaz means

Dagaz is the rune of day, dawn, and the breakthrough from darkness into light. Its symmetrical shape represents the balance point between light and dark, the liminal moment of dawn when night transforms into day. In Norse cosmology, Dag (Day) is the son of Nott (Night) and rides his horse Skinfaxi across the sky, whose mane illuminates the world. In Heathen practice, Dagaz signals a major transformation, a moment of awakening and clarity where the old gives way to the new. It represents the paradox of opposites reconciled and the hope that always follows the darkest hour.

Dagaz in the historical rune poems

Three medieval poems preserve the meanings of the runes — the oldest testimony we have.

Day, the glorious light of the Creator, is sent by the Lord; it is beloved of men, a source of hope and happiness to rich and poor, and of service to all.
