Meditation on the Amesha Spentas

 ·  Duration: 20 min

Contemplating the Seven Divine Emanations of Ahura Mazda — The Amesha Spentas ('Holy Immortals') are the seven great emanations of Ahura Mazda -- divine principles that sustain the cosmos and serve as models for righteous living. Each Amesha Spenta governs an aspect of creation and a corresponding human virtue. This meditation contemplates each one in turn, using them as mirrors for self-examination and aspiration. The Gathas of Zarathustra (Yasna 28-53) present the Amesha Spentas not as distant abstractions but as living presences with whom the righteous can commune.

What you need

  • A quiet space
  • A candle or fire source
  • A comfortable seated position
  • Optional: seven small objects to represent each Amesha Spenta (a stone, a candle, a metal object, soil, water, a plant, and an image of a person)

The rite, step by step

  1. 1

    Light the Fire

Light a candle. Say: 'I kindle this flame in the name of Asha Vahishta -- Best Righteousness. May it illuminate my meditation and reveal the truth of my inner state. I invite the Amesha Spentas to be present.'

  2. 2

    Center with the Ashem Vohu

Recite the Ashem Vohu three times, slowly: 'Righteousness is good; it is the best. Happy is the person who is righteous for the sake of the best righteousness.' Let each recitation settle deeper into silence.

  3. 3

    Contemplate Each Amesha Spenta

Move through each of the seven Amesha Spentas in order. For each one: 1. Speak its name aloud 2. Name the aspect of creation it guards 3. State the virtue it represents 4. Ask yourself the contemplation question 5. Sit in silence for one minute with whatever arises Do not judge yourself -- simply see clearly. The Amesha Spentas are not condemning; they are illuminating.

  4. 4

    Identify Your Edge

After contemplating all seven, ask: 'Which Amesha Spenta's virtue am I most neglecting right now? Where is my greatest gap between who I am and who Asha calls me to be?' Sit with the answer. This is your edge -- the place where growth is needed and possible.

  5. 5

    Commitment

Make one specific commitment to the Amesha Spenta you most need: 'I commit to [specific action] in honor of [Amesha Spenta name]. I will practice [virtue] in [specific situation] this week.'

  6. 6

Close with the Yatha Ahu Vairyo

Recite: 'As is the will of the Lord, so it is for the righteous. The gifts of Vohu Mana come from deeds done for Mazda. The kingdom of Ahura Mazda is established for those who relieve the poor.' Bow toward the flame. Say: 'I carry the seven lights within me. May they guide my path. Ashem Vohu.'
