What Ansuz means
Ansuz is the rune of Odin, the Allfather, and represents divine communication, wisdom, and the gift of speech. In the lore, Odin gave humanity the gifts of inspiration (ond), consciousness (odhr), and appearance (la). Ansuz connects the practitioner to ancestral wisdom and the voice of the gods. It is the rune of the poet, the skald, and the seer. In Heathen practice, Ansuz calls for attentiveness to messages, signs, and the counsel of elders and the divine.
Ansuz in the historical rune poems
Three medieval poems preserve the meanings of the runes — the oldest testimony we have.
The mouth is the source of all language, a pillar of wisdom and a comfort to wise men, a blessing and a joy to every knight.
Estuary is the way of most journeys; but a scabbard is of swords.
God is the aged Gautr, and prince of Asgard, and lord of Valhalla.
