Lögr

“Water / Lake / Sea” · sound L · LO-gr

What Lögr means

The deep, the unconscious, the source of all life — water falls from the clouds, feeds the wells of the Norns, and returns to the sea

In the older 24-rune Elder Futhark, Lögr corresponds to Laguz.

Lögr in the rune poems

The Norwegian and Icelandic rune poems are the medieval testimony to the sixteen Younger Futhark runes — the oldest verse describing each stave by name.

Lögr er, er fellr ór fjalle / foss; en gull ero nosser.
“Water is that which falls from the mountain as a waterfall; but gold is costly things.”
Norwegian Rune Poem (13th c.)
Lögr er vellanda vatn / ok viðr ketill / ok glömmungr grund.
“Water is a welling stream / and a wide kettle / and the land of fish.”
Icelandic Rune Poem (15th c.)
